Sanjoy Roy was walking around in a t-shirt that said KP (Kolkata Police) even though he wasn't a police officer. His bicycle also bore a KP tag.
Kolkata: Sanjoy Roy was not employed by the hospital but was frequently spotted in buildings on the site. He is suspected of raping and killing a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Roy volunteered for the Kolkata Police as a citizen. Civilian volunteers are hired on a contract basis by law enforcement to help with a variety of tasks, such as disaster relief and traffic control. These volunteers, who are paid about ₹12,000 per month, are not entitled to the same amenities as official police officers.
Roy reportedly volunteered for the disaster management group of Kolkata Police in 2019 before moving to the police welfare cell.
After that, he relocated to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital police outpost, where he was able to visit every department. According to accounts, Roy was a part of a scheme at the government-run hospital where patients' families were charged to guarantee admission. If the family of the patients were not able to secure a bed at the government hospital, he would additionally charge them for locating a bed in adjacent nursing homes.
Roy wasn't a regular cop, but he occasionally stayed at the police barracks thanks to his connections. He was walking about wearing a t-shirt that said KP, which stands for Kolkata Police. There was a KP tag on his bike also. According to reports, he identified himself as a member of the Kolkata Police, leading many other community volunteers to believe he was a police officer.
Local media accounts state that shortly after Roy was questioned by police, he confessed to the crime. According to the sources, he said, "Hang me if you want," with no regret. It has been reported that his cell phone was loaded with explicit content.
The doctor's body was discovered in the same building hours later. Roy was detained after a CCTV camera on the hospital grounds saw him entering the emergency department on Friday at around four in the morning. Next to the victim's body was a Bluetooth headset that provided even another important clue. Roy had the headset around his neck as he entered the premises, according to the CCTV footage. When he got out, it was gone. The victim's phone was also synced with the headphones that was adjacent to his body.
After executing the horrible murder, Roy allegedly went home and cleaned his clothing in an attempt to remove any evidence. On his shoes, however, the police discovered bloodstains. The defendant has been placed under arrest by the police until August 23.
Nationwide protests have been triggered by the terrible rape and murder of the doctor while he was on duty. The medical college's principal has resigned amid the unrest. Concerns have been expressed regarding the safety of physicians in the event that everyone had unrestricted access to the facility at unusual hours.
