'He is not the captain': Virat Kohli pulled up by Matthew Hayden on live TV for causing 'way too much interjection'
Matthew Hayden criticized Virat Kohli for frequently approaching the umpires during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. Kohli was often talking to the officials more than the captain, Faf du Plessis. This did not sit well with the former Australia opener, who expressed his disappointment on air.
The incident happened in the 12th over of CSK's chase. As the umpires gathered to talk, Kohli walked up and said something that caught Hayden's attention. Kohli had been talking to the umpires previously as well, but this time, Hayden pointed out that it wasn’t Kohli's role to cause these many 'interjections'.
"There's way too much interjection from Virat Kohli. He is not the captain and he should not be in those conversations with the umpire," Hayden said during commentary.
Kohli's emotions were high during Sunday's intense match. He talked to himself while batting, and celebrated each boundary with either a punch in the air or on his bat. Kohli's emotions were even higher while fielding. He celebrated each wicket as if it was his own, showing glimpses of his old captaincy style.
Kohli got involved again in the second last over when an overthrow let MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja take an extra run. He went up to the umpire, while du Plessis looked on in disbelief. It seemed like Kohli was acting as the captain instead of du Plessis.
Kohli was also active when Yash Dayal bowled a full toss to Dhoni in the final over, with CSK needing 17 runs to win. Kohli ran from long-on, scolded Dayal, and advised him to bowl a slower ball instead of a yorker. This advice worked as Dhoni got out on the next ball, and Jadeja was unable to score the needed runs, avoiding a repeat of last year's IPL finish – 10 off two balls.
When Jadeja missed on the final ball, an excited Kohli went wild near the boundary line. This intense version of him had not been seen in a while, but on this crucial match evening, the world saw the return of Kohli, determined to lead RCB to the IPL title. Until then, Kohli won’t rest. He will keep coming at the opposition hard and fast.
