Former judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay's comment "Mamata Banerjee, what is your price" has sparked controversy, leading to the Trinamool Congress lodging a complaint with the Election Commission.
Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who joined the BJP after resigning from his position as a Calcutta High Court judge, reportedly inquired about "Mamata Banerjee's price."
On Thursday, the Trinamool Congress filed a complaint with the Election Commission against former high court judge and BJP candidate, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, accusing him of making "misogynistic" remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who joined the BJP after resigning from his position as a Calcutta High Court judge, reportedly inquired about "Mamata Banerjee's price."
He allegedly made these remarks at an election rally in East Midnapore's Chaitanyapur on Wednesday.
"Trinamool says Rekha Patra (BJP's Sandeshkhali candidate) was bought for ₹2000. So, Mamata Banerjee, what is your price, ₹10 lakh?" he said, according to the Times of India.
The Trinamool Congress criticized the politician, stating that he had crossed all limits. The party claimed that shameful words were used to tarnish the reputation of a woman chief minister.
"It is disgraceful that a former judge who is now a BJP candidate uses such language to defame a woman chief minister. This is the BJP's guarantee that women under BJP rule will be insulted in this manner," TMC leader Santanu Sen told PTI.
A video clip purportedly showing the alleged remarks has gone viral. However, the BJP has dismissed the clip as fake.
The party accused the TMC of attempting to tarnish the BJP's image with such fabricated videos.
"We do not acknowledge the existence of any such videos. This is a tactic by the TMC to circulate fake videos and defame the BJP. However, this will not affect the elections," stated BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya.
Abhijit Gangopadhyay is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from West Bengal's Tamluk constituency.
Earlier this month, Gangopadhyay approached the Calcutta High Court, alleging police overreaction in registering an attempt to murder case against him.
His lawyer informed the court that the FIR was lodged to hinder his campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls.
Mamata Banerjee's TMC is encountering a strong challenge from the BJP, which secured 18 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 general elections.
