The number of people killed in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district as a result of drinking phony alcohol has risen to 61. Following the hooch incident that occurred in Karunapuram hamlet on June 18, up to 118 persons are undergoing treatment at various hospitals.

The increase in fatalities coincided with the National Human Rights Commission's (NHRC) suo moto recognition of the occurrence, following which it sent letters to the state police director general and the chief secretary of Tamil Nadu, requesting a thorough report on the incident within seven days.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also established a three-person team to investigate the incident after taking suo moto notice of the six women's fatalities in the hooch catastrophe. Khushbu Sundar, a member of the statutory board, will pay a visit to the victims' relatives and those receiving treatment today.

Meanwhile, the hooch disaster has set up a political spat between the opposition AIADMK and the government DMK, which is led by Chief Minister MK Stalin.

Stalin reiterated that the state government was "ready to reply to questions" and suspended the AIADMK MPs for the balance of the assembly term.

"However, this is not accepted by the opposition leaders, and speaking outside is unacceptable. For cheap publicity, that's why," the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said.
