Impact in Kolkata

Heavy rain and strong winds continue in Kolkata. Efforts are underway to reduce the damage from Cyclone Remal.

"Two people have died since Cyclone Remal hit on Sunday night," said Kamrul Hasan, secretary of Bangladesh's disaster management ministry, to AFP.

Response in Kolkata

Kolkata Municipality and Kolkata Police Disaster Management teams are clearing fallen trees, especially in Alipore. Workers are working hard to clear roads despite ongoing rain.

Priyabrata Roy, DC South Kolkata, told ANI, "We are getting reports of fallen trees in some areas. Kolkata Municipality and Police Disaster Management teams are on the scene. The fallen trees will be cut and removed soon to open the roads. By morning, the situation will improve. Police's special control room is monitoring the situation all night. The Municipality Control Room is also open."

Cyclone's Path

"The Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Remal' crossed the Bangladesh and West Bengal Coasts between Sagar Islands and Khepupara near southwest of Mongla at Latitude 21.75°N and Longitude 89.2°E," said IMD on X.

NDRF Deployment

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has 14 teams ready in the state to help with rescue and relief efforts.

Evacuations in West Bengal

West Bengal evacuated over 100,000 people from risky areas to safety as a precaution.

"The Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Remal' moved nearly northwards at 13 kmph over the last six hours. It crossed Bangladesh and West Bengal Coasts between Sagar Islands and Khepupara near southwest of Mongla," said IMD on X on Monday morning.
