According to a government announcement, Vikram Misri, the deputy national security advisor (NSA), was appointed as the new foreign secretary on Friday. With effect from July 15, 2024, Misri, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 1989 batch, will take over as India's new foreign secretary, replacing current Vinay Kwatra.

"The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Vikram Misri, IFS (1989), Deputy National Security Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat to the post of Foreign Secretary w.e.f 15th July 2024 vice Shri Vinay Kwatra," according to the order issued by the Ministry of Personnel.
The committee also gave its approval to Misri's tenure being reduced. as the Deputy NSA, the order read further.

Notably, in March of this year, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, the current Foreign Secretary, received a six-month extension. But the ruling has since been changed, and Kwatra's term is set to expire on July 14.

Misri has a long history in diplomacy, having worked for three Indian prime ministers: Manmohan Singh, Narendra Modi, and Inder Kumar Gujral as a private secretary. His most recent ambassadorial assignment was in Beijing, where he served as one of the Ministry of External Affairs' leading authorities on China. He was appointed to the National Security Council Secretariat in January of 2022.
