Chennai: In the Kallakurichi area of the State, 47 persons have died as a result of drinking illicit alcohol, according to Tamil Nadu Director of Medical Education Sangumani's statement on Friday.

In addition, three defendants in the Kallakurichi illicit liquor case were transferred to Cudallore Central Prison and given a 15-day judicial detention period. The accused was presented before the district combined court by the Kallakurichi police. The defendants have been named as Govindaraj, Damadoran, and Vijaya, according to the police.

In the meantime, Union Home Minister Amit Shah received a letter from Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai asking for a CBI investigation into the fatalities. He had already claimed that there was cooperation between DMK members and neighborhood liquor vendors, implicating the ruling DMK government in the illicit booze fatality incident in Kallakurichi.

"We would want to notify your excellent office that 23 lives were lost in a similar tragedy that happened in May 2023 in Marakkanam, Tamil Nadu's Villupuram district and Chengalpattu district. Because of the DMK government's incompetent leadership, over 60 people have died in Tamil Nadu from alcohol during the last two years, he stated in his letter.
