Naveen Jindal, the Chairman of Jindal Steel and Power Limited, won the Kurukshetra seat in 2009 on a Congress ticket. However, he lost the seat in 2014 and did not contest in 2019. With assets totaling ₹1241 Crore, he is the richest candidate in Phase 6 of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Jindal, who switched from the Congress party to the BJP in March this year, is contesting from the Kurukshetra seat in Haryana.
In Phase 6, scheduled for May 25, voters in 57 Lok Sabha seats across seven states will cast their ballots.
Naveen Jindal is up against Indian National Lok Dal's (INLD) Abhay Chautala and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s Sushil Gupta in the Kurukshetra constituency. The AAP is contesting in Kurukshetra as part of a seat-sharing deal with the Congress party in the INDIA bloc.
Sushil Gupta, a former AAP Rajya Sabha MP, owns assets worth ₹169 Crore and is the third richest candidate in Phase 6. Gupta unsuccessfully contested the 2013 Delhi assembly election from the Moti Nagar seat on the Congress ticket. He is known as an educationist and businessman, with institutions serving 15,000 students across Delhi and Haryana. Additionally, he owns Maharaja Agrasen Hospitals and medical colleges in the Delhi-NCR region.
Santrupt Misra, the Biju Janata Dal candidate from Cuttack, Odisha, with assets worth ₹482 Crore, is the second richest candidate in Phase 6. Misra, a 59-year-old group director of human resources in the Aditya Birla group, left his high-profile job in February to join the BJD.
Out of the 866 candidates analyzed by the Association for Democratic Rights (ADR) in Phase 6, 39% are Crorepatis. Several candidates from major parties, including the BJD, RJD, JD(U), BJP, Samajwadi Party, Congress, AAP, and TMC, have declared assets exceeding ₹1 crore. The average assets per candidate contesting in Phase 6 of the Lok Sabha elections amount to ₹6.21 crores.
