Leader of the opposition (LoP) Mallikarjun Kharge accused the administration of giving financial allocations to two states to "save the government" and "keep some people happy," which sparked a verbal spat between the government and the opposition in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

"All this has happened to please someone, to save the chair, and we condemn it," Kharge stated during a speech in the House.

The Union budget was criticized by the Congress and other opposition parties for allocating special funds to Andhra Pradesh and Bihar, the two states in which the BJP is in a coalition with the TDP and the JDU, while ignoring other states.

"We denounce the fact that nothing was given to the BJP in states where the opposition won and they were ignored. How can progress occur if there is no balance? Kharge remarked.


As a native of Karnataka, the state from where Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman hails, the Congress politician claimed he had anticipated a more favorable allocation.

Then the opposition left the Upper House for a short while.

In response to his accusation, Sitharaman stated that the claim was unfounded because allocations had also been granted to other states.

"In a speech, we are not given the chance to mention every state. Congress ought to be aware that it has been in power. For example, Maharashtra was not mentioned. However, the Cabinet made a significant choice. Did Maharashtra lose out? ₹75,000 crore has been approved, the speaker stated.


The FM continued by saying that although the states were not stated in the speech, she could provide the names of numerous states where allocations had been made.
