Delhi Zoo Will Increase Surveillance Following Animals' Violent Battle
According to Sanjeet Kumar, director of the Delhi Zoo, these kinds of disputes amongst animals happen frequently.
New Delhi: Following a recent incident of hostility between two male chinkaras that resulted in one of them dying, officials at the Delhi Zoo have announced intentions to add more CCTV cameras to animal enclosures.
On June 1, two male chinkaras engaged in a vicious battle.
According to Sanjeet Kumar, director of the Delhi Zoo, these kinds of disputes amongst animals happen frequently.
"Males frequently battle in zoos and the wild to establish supremacy. Sadly, there were serious injuries as a result of the battle in this instance. The male patient had an intestinal injury and was sent to the hospital, but he passed away while receiving treatment, the source stated.
The remaining chinkara, which only had minor wounds, is housed in an enclosure alongside other creatures, one of which was born just last month.
In the wake of this incident, Kumar stated, "We are also working to reduce our response time through advanced technology and optimal use of manpower." He added, "Several measures have been taken to enhance animal safety and monitoring."
"We are planning to increase the number of CCTV cameras and expand coverage in animal areas to ensure quicker information relay during emergencies," he told the Press Trust of India.
"We cannot change their core behavior," the director of the Delhi Zoo added, "but we strive to prevent such incidents from escalating." Regretfully, there are instances when these fights have dire consequences."
According to the officials of the Delhi Zoo, diseases that have the potential to wipe out an entire species have always posed a serious threat to them.
