AR Rahman's International Awards
AR Rahman achieved significant recognition for his work on Danny Boyle's 2008 film "Slumdog Millionaire," earning two Oscars, two Grammys, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe. Despite the practice of some celebrities, Rahman refrains from using his Oscar statuettes as door handles, respecting his late mother's wishes. In an interview with Film Companion, Rahman shared that his mother, Kareema Begum, stored his international awards in her Dubai home, convinced they were made of gold.
Where Rahman Keeps His Awards
The composer explained that his mother wrapped his awards in a towel and stored them in Dubai, believing them to be made of gold. After her passing, Rahman relocated the awards to the Firdaus studio in Dubai, where they are displayed in a showcase. Additionally, Rahman has received numerous Indian awards, including six National Awards and over 32 Filmfare Awards, which he keeps in a special room in his hometown, Chennai.
Rahman's Mother's Support
Rahman expressed gratitude for his mother's support during his early struggles. He recounted how she contributed to the establishment of his music studio by pledging her jewelry, enabling him to purchase essential equipment. Rahman emphasized the significance of this gesture, highlighting how it empowered him and shaped his future. Kareema Begum passed away in 2020.
