Prajwal Revanna was arrested at Bengaluru airport.

Revanna, the NDA candidate for the Hassan Lok Sabha seat, departed for Germany on April 27, the day after polling took place, and shortly after numerous videos featuring him surfaced.

Suspended Janata Dal (Secular) or JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna was apprehended at the Bengaluru airport upon his return from Germany in the early hours of Friday, weeks after facing allegations of mass sexual assault.

Revanna, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the Hassan Lok Sabha seat, departed for Germany on April 27, a day after the polling took place, and shortly after thousands of his videos surfaced. Subsequently, some women appearing in the videos have accused Prajwal of sexually assaulting them.

A special investigation team (SIT) established to investigate the allegations detained him prior to interrogation. An SIT official mentioned that Revanna, the Member of Parliament from Hassan, would initially undergo a medical examination at Bengaluru’s Bowring Hospital. Additionally, the official stated that Revanna would subsequently be brought before a magistrate for further custody. The SIT confiscated Revanna’s mobile phone and two suitcases.

Interpol notified the SIT, Bengaluru Police, and immigration authorities about his return on Thursday afternoon.

Revanna's anticipatory bail plea in a Bengaluru session court was set to be heard separately on Friday. In the plea, he refuted all allegations, asserting that they were politically motivated. "The electronic evidence presented is fabricated to substantiate a false case," the plea stated.

It further mentioned that Revanna shared a cordial relationship with his accuser, a political activist involved in his recent election campaign. "Prajwal is dismayed by the baseless allegations outlined in the complaint," it added. He attributed the accusations to political rivalry and jealousy.

Revanna maintained that his overseas travel was pre-planned and unrelated to the charges. "Following his participation in the election process on April 26, 2024, Prajwal departed the country as scheduled. Nonetheless, a malicious campaign was launched against Prajwal and his father, resulting in the false allegations," the plea elaborated.

JD(S) suspended Revanna, who released a video statement this week, stating his intention to appear before the SIT at 10 am on May 31, following allegations of sexual assault against him.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara announced on Thursday that Revanna would be arrested upon his arrival in India, as reports suggested that the suspended JD(S) leader was expected to return from Germany early on Friday. He also mentioned that the government was informed about Revanna's reservation on a Munich-Bengaluru Lufthansa flight.
