Although Lakshya Sen's journey to an Olympic medal was never going to be a cruise, it appears to be paved with barnacles, the colonies of marine creatures that attach themselves to ships and reduce their speed. Sen will have to overcome tall obstacles at every turn to reach the Paris podium, but this might not be a bad thing for the Indian, who thrives in dangerous situations on the biggest platforms.

Out of the 13 groups, he is assigned to one of the two that has four shuttlers. There will be one fewer match in each of the other 11 pools, which contain three players. Sen must defeat his fierce rival from Indonesia, Jonatan Christie, in that competitive Group L, which also includes Kevin Cordon, a surprise semifinalist in Tokyo.
