Is Swati Maliwal, 'assaulted' by Arvind Kejriwal's aide, resigning from AAP? Rajya Sabha MP opens up on next move

Swati Maliwal claimed that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had not called her since the May 13 incident.

Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal said she will not leave the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as “it does not belong to two or three people.” In an interview with The Indian Express, Maliwal spoke about being assaulted by Arvind Kejriwal's assistant Bibhav Kumar during a visit to the Chief Minister’s residence on May 13. She mentioned that no one from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) approached her after the incident.

“If I was not truthful, maybe (relations between her and the party could have been mended)… Despite being severely beaten, I tried to stay composed because there was a major election underway, and I knew this issue would be politicized. I understand it. I tried to control myself, but no way… They have hurt the entire women’s movement by victim-shaming. I will stay in the party because it does not belong to two or three people. I have given it my sweat and blood too,” The Indian Express quoted Swati Maliwal as saying.

The former Delhi Commission for Women chief said that only the Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena spoke to her, as “he is in a Constitutional post.” He asked her about the incident and if she was facing any problems with the police, she said.

In another interview with Hindustan Times, Maliwal said on Sunday that she does not plan to quit AAP. She also claimed that she was warned that if she filed a complaint, they would label her a BJP agent.

AAP did not respond to requests for comments on the allegations. Kumar filed a counter-complaint, accusing Maliwal of forcefully entering the CM’s premises and using abusive language.

“I left my job as an engineer in 2006… I was a full-time volunteer with Arvind Kejriwal. I was a core committee member of the Anna (Hazare) movement... My blood and sweat went into building the party… I became an MP because of my hard work and dedication… I want to clarify that I have no personal issues with anyone in the party. Delhi Police will investigate why I was assaulted and on whose orders,” she said.

Maliwal also claimed that Arvind Kejriwal had not called her so far. “The situation would have been different to the extent that at least to my mind, I would have been sure he was not involved. I would have still filed a police complaint. That relationship would have stayed intact and I would have liked to know what he thinks. Today I am not giving anyone a clean chit,” The Indian Express quoted her as saying.

Meanwhile, Bibhav Kumar has applied for bail in a Delhi court, which has asked for a response from Delhi Police. Kumar's lawyers filed the plea after he was placed in four days of judicial custody last Friday. The court heard the plea on Monday.

His earlier anticipatory bail plea was deemed "infructuous" by the court. Delhi Police claimed that Bibhav Kumar was not cooperating in the investigation, was evasive in his replies, and had not disclosed his mobile phone password.
